Description: 15th Annual Greater Kansas City Japan Festival
A traditional-Japanese-drum group, a pop singer from Kyoto, Japan, and (of course) sumo wrestlers are the featured performers for the 15th Annual Greater Kansas City Japan Festival.
Denver Taiko! will perform at 3:15 and 7:45 p.m. in Yardley Hall.
The group, which is comprised of third, fourth, and fifth generations of Japanese Americans, make a return visit to the festival to delight audiences with the percussive power of traditional Japanese drums played to heart-thumping crescendos.
Also returning is Aya Uchida, a vocalist who introduces listeners to both classical Japanese songs and the new emerging pop sound from Japan. She will perform at 1:35 and 5:35 p.m. in Yardley Hall and throughout the day in the Capitol Conference Center of the Regnier Center, where Japanese food will be available.
Title-winning sumo wrestlers will take the stage at 12:50, 4:40 and 6:50 p.m. to show various movements of traditional sumo while an announcer narrates the action.
Throughout the day, festival attendees can attend many cultural presentations, demonstrations and workshops. Festival favorites include the Japanese candy artist, kids' activities, anime and manga, buyo dancing and bento boxes.
