Description: As part of the monthly Local Life (formerly Friday Night Art Market) in Overland Park and to celebrate The General Store's One Year Anniversary, fine art photographer Pilar Law is opening an exhibition of recent photographic prints from her series entitled "The Space Between: Visual Meditations."
The term "photography" immediately calls to mind the literal documentation of the world encountered by the camera's lens. Recording a scene is the unique capability upon which photography's initial acceptance was based. By defeating photography's fundamental mission to render detail and reality, Pilar Law uses the medium to interpret and abstract her world, deconstructing objects to form and color, and rendering the familiar world as a mysterious dream. In "The Space Between," Law asks the viewer to engage and experience a vision free from the need to identify and label what they see.
Inspired by her recent move to Kansas City and her meditation practice, this collection of images interprets the process of gazing through an object without seeing it, or softly closing the eyes to allow the entry of only a sliver of light. This state of meditative half-seeing produces an un-focused and abstracted vision of one's surroundings. "My photographs explore this way of seeing-of being-through the lens of my camera," offers Law. "Sometimes I feel over-stimulated by material reality, but through my un-focused lens objects become gorgeous shapes splashed with sensual color, the recognizable retreats into light, form and line."
"The Space Between" lets us meditate on the nature of beauty often hidden within the details of the world that surrounds us.
Please join the opening of this first exhibition in the Kansas City area for photographer/artist Pilar Law.
