Description: Rodin - Art Exhibit
Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917) was one of the most influential sculptors of the 19th century. His innovative modeling technique and unconventional, often provocative subject matter earned him praise as the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo. Going against academic tradition, Rodin created highly expressive sculptures of the human body in his quest to convey such universal emotions as love, longing, reverie and despair.
This exhibition brings together 40 bronze sculptures by Rodin from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation.
The sculptures are divided into three thematic groups: The Gates of Hell section, which contains figures relating to the massive bronze portal that was Rodin's most important commission; a group dedicated to the statues of historical and cultural heroes commissioned as public monuments; and a series of isolated hands that strive to express different states of being.

Formal portraits have been commissioned from artists for centuries, allowing intimate images of loved ones to be kept close. Location: Nelson-Atkins Building, Gallery P27
Abstraction: From A to B, an exhibition of prints by Josef Albers and Herbert Bayer, engages a lively dialogue between geometric and organic abstraction.

Bayer's prints celebrate the organic dynamism of nature revealed in pulsing plays of dark and light, rhythmic fluidity and evocative colors.
Both artists taught at the German Bauhaus, the 20th century's most innovative and influential school for art, design and architecture. They later became art world luminaries in the United States.

Description: Looking at Historic Lands: Urban and Rural Exhibit
Location: Nelson-Atkins Building, Gallery P13
This group of French and English 18th-century prints and drawings was created during a period of on-going fascination with exotic lands and cultures and a passion for travel. At this time, Britain was the wealthiest nation in the world, and a significant number of both English and French citizens had the time, money and inclination to wander the continent. The wealthiest purchased topographical paintings, but others chose drawings, or the least expensive option, prints, to commemorate their experiences.
Artists such as Pond and Gainsborough included piping shepherds in idyllic settings with Roman ruins. They responded to a growing trend toward a romanticized view of nature and rural or village life. Even in the more urban views of Robert and Boissieu, nature imposes itself on the works of man, eroding the structure of a bridge and promising the same, inevitable fate to buildings that wait silently like spectators in a theatre.

Description: World War I All-Stars - Sports & Inter-Allied Games Exhibition
Explore the important role sports played during the Great War through a new exhibition entitled World War I All-Stars: Sports & the Inter-Allied Games.
Located in Exhibit Hall, the exhibition highlights the Inter-Allied Games of 1919, an Olympics-type competition that was designed to strengthen the bonds of understanding among soldiers of the Allied nations after World War I ended.
"Despite the competitive nature of athletic events, the Inter-Allied Games effectively bridged international borders and served as a common 'language' unfettered by culture or nationality," says Vice President of Collections and Research & Chief Historian Dr. Lisa Budreau. "We are proud to share this important yet fairly unknown story with both sports fans and history buffs alike."
In addition to the Inter-Allied Games, the exhibition places a special emphasis on American baseball players and other famous athletes who served in the Great War. Visitors will view the Museum's rare collection of wartime athletic gear as well as items on loan from various institutions across the United States, including the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., First Division Museum in Cantigny, Ill., the YMCA Archives in Minneapolis, Minn., Ohio State University, and many more.

Description: Timothy H. O'Sullivan: The King Survey Photographs Exhibit
Location: Bloch Building, Gallery L11
The photographs made by Timothy H. O'Sullivan as part of the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, or King Survey, comprise an iconic and richly varied body of work.
The first of the great post-Civil War Western expeditions, the King Survey was organized under the authority of the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers. Between 1867 and 1872, Clarence King, the geologist in charge, and his party studied a vast swath of terrain, approximately 100 by 800 miles, encompassing the path of the soon-to-be-completed transcontinental railroad, from the border of California eastward to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
The survey's official photographer, Timothy H. O'Sullivan, was talented, resourceful and imaginative. In four seasons with King's group-1867, 1869 and 1872-he created a diverse body of photographs: geological studies, landscapes, views of miners and mining operations, records of cities and settlements, studies of the survey itself and self-reflexive meditations on his own presence in the West.

Description: Fine Lines: Whistler and the American Etching Revival
"In an exhibition of etchings, the etchings are the last things people come to see," joked James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), America's premier etcher.
In truth, Whistler's etchings were incredibly popular. His talent with a copper plate, wax ground, etching needle and acid bath made him the most influential and internationally respected modern etcher. The technical innovations he brought to the medium renewed interest in this centuries-old method of printmaking.
This installation of American etchings celebrates Whistler's achievements. It also showcases the wide-ranging possibilities of etchings during and after the American Etching Revival of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The character and quality of the fine lines that comprise this selection reward careful looking. These etchings turn Whistler's quip on its ear - these etchings are the first things people come to see.

ARTISTS:
Zack Balber - Tamim
The Hebrew word "Tamim" translates as "pure", "unblemished", and "complete". Photographer Zack Balber offers a unique, incongruous twist on Tamim's denotation in his first museum exhibition. Utilizing portrait photography, Balber reveals the camouflaged identity of some of Judaism's most unfamiliar members.
Chris Biddy - Kids
Focusing upon seemingly apthetic, angst ridden adolescents immersed within the social networking context of smart phones and digital cameras, Biddy portrays youth teetering between innocence and self-awareness - often exhibiting culpable or imprudent behaviors.
Lauren Mabry - Cylinders
Mabry employs elemental, cylindrical vessels as dimensional canvases. These minimal forms serve as perfect complements to her lush and expressive glaze compositions.

Description: Inventing the Modern World - Decorative Arts at the World's Fair, 1851-1939 - Art Exhibit
World's fairs were showcases and marketplaces for modern design and by virtue of their global reach and participation—they served as a democratizing force for design unlike anything seen before or since. Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World's Fairs, 1851–1939 is the first comprehensive exhibition to explore decorative arts made for world's fairs, from the 1851 The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in London to the New York World's Fair in 1939.
Inventing the Modern World will showcase 175 of the most extraordinary works of furniture, metalwork, glass, ceramics, textiles and jewelry that were displayed at the fairs. These objects are not only the most important and impressive of those that were shown, they are also the physical manifestation of the progressive, economic and technological ideals embodied in the fairs. Impermanent as the exhibitions themselves were, these decorative arts are often the only surviving remnants of the world's fairs.
Extensive research and consultation with museums and collectors throughout Europe and America has resulted in the selection of works from every major and several minor fairs for the exhibition, including the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, the 1933 Century of Progress International Exposition, both in Chicago, and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis. These exceptional and singular objects—some never before seen in the United States—represent the pinnacle of scientific and artistic achievements of their time, and demonstrate how innovative design has positively affected modern living.

Description: Faces from China's Past: Paintings for Entertainment & Remembrance
The figure paintings in this exhibition were made for decoration and entertainment or to honor the living and commemorate the dead. They were not intended for scholarly enjoyment or as collector's items, and the artists who painted them are little known today. Nevertheless, these works are immediately appealing and tell fascinating stories about people real and imagined.
"Beautiful and Talented Women" affords forbidden glimpses of life in the women's quarters, catalogue women's activities, and evoke court life in ancient times. Many paintings in this section idealize the aesthetic and sensual lives of women, particularly those of concubines and courtesans.
"Commemorative and Ancestor Portraits" celebrate anniversaries and the achievements of the living or venerate people of substance who had passed away. Their audience may have been primarily family and friends.
"In the Company of Women" echoes themes in contemporary popular literature and may have appealed to literate members of both genders.
"Sketched from Art, Sketched from Life" features figures and faces based on old paintings or on firsthand observation and may have been viewed as a form of realistic documentation.
