ShoppingPerhaps Cat Deeley, host of Fox Network’s So You Think You Can Dance, best summarized the heart of shoppers everywhere when she said, “I don’t shop because I need something, I just shop for shopping’s sake.” Whether you’re looking for something specific, searching for a unique find or just want to browse, Overland Park and the entire Kansas City metro area has plenty to satisfy every taste and budget. So, put on your shopping shoes and let the fun begin! Overland Park might be one of the best places to visit if shopping is one of your favorite pastimes. A great site to start your excursion is Oak Park Mall, the region’s largest indoor shopping center. With more than 185 stores, Oak Park Mall is sure to please. Home to Nordstrom (the only one in the Kansas City area), Macy’s, Dillard’s, JC Penney and so much more, there is definitely something for everyone. If you enjoy shopping at local retailers – and also a little bit of history on the side – then Historic Downtown Overland Park is the place for you. A vibrant 25-block shopping and dining district, Downtown Overland Park boasts over 300 locally owned and operated venues. Trace Overland Park’s roots back to William B. Strang, Jr., who founded the city, by visiting his limestone car barn, now home to Traditions Furniture. A visit during mid-April through October will provide the opportunity to enjoy an outdoor concert or purchase fresh produce at the Overland Park Farmer’s Market – one of the best in Kansas City. You can spend a quiet afternoon strolling through the district, taking your time to visit some of the most unique specialty stores in the region, including Ten Thousand Villages, which sells fair trade items from around the world, and Harper’s Fabric & Quilt Company, one of the top-rated quilting stores in the country. Put those shopping shoes to work and don’t forget to make a stop for lunch or dinner! Give your shoes a break and drive right up to the next location on your list, venturing to one of Overland Park’s many shopping corridors situated along Metcalf Avenue at 95th Street (including Metcalf South Shopping Center), 119th Street and 135th Street. With stores ranging from national retailers like Best Buy and DSW Shoe Warehouse to locally owned and operated venues including Bella B’s Boutique and the Irish Crystal Company, you are sure to find plenty to keep that shopping bug satisfied. Finally, when you have grown tired and you’re looking for a little luxury, trade in your shoes for a new pair at Corbin Park or Hawthorne Plaza, two of Overland Park’s premier shopping centers. Visit Von Maur at Corbin Park for upscale shopping with a wide range of premium merchandise, or find that special item at one of the many boutiques in Hawthorne Plaza. Wherever your time in Overland Park takes you, your shopping shoes are sure to get a workout. After you’ve visited all Overland Park has to offer, you may want to spend some time shopping at one of the many sites throughout Kansas City. Perhaps the best known shopping district in the area is the beloved Country Club Plaza. The Plaza, as locals call it, was built in 1922 by J.C. Nichols, who had a vision of an upscale shopping destination, filled with art and architecture reminiscent of the Old World. Since then, the 15-block district has become one of the world’s most notable shopping and entertainment regions. Not only known for shopping, the Plaza has several events throughout the year including the Plaza Art Fair in September and the Plaza lights, which get switched on Thanksgiving evening and stay lit through the beginning of the New Year. Capturing the same outdoor spirit of the Plaza, there are many other open-air entertainment venues throughout Kansas City. Legends Outlets Kansas City features several establishments, which can’t be found anywhere else in the metro including Dave & Busters and kid’s favorite T-Rex. They are also home to several factory stores from national chains like Banana Republic and Nike to family friendly favorites such as Old Navy and JCPenney. Adjacent to the Legends are the wildly popular Cabela’s and Nebraska Furniture Mart, making this a “can’t miss” destination. In Leawood, Overland Park’s neighbor, you will find Town Center Plaza, one of the most convenient and finest places to shop in the metro. Town Center features well-tended landscaping, wonderful pieces of public art and over 90 stores to choose from including Macy’s and Stand Style Boutique, a locally-owned favorite. Finally, in north Kansas City, you will find Zona Rosa, one of the metro’s most popular urban retail centers. Zona Rosa is truly a “city within a city” with shopping, dining, entertainment, commercial and residential real estate located side-by-side with an old-world village feel. Find well-known retailers like Ann Taylor and Forever XXI, alongside great entertainment like The Kansas City Improv Comedy Club and O’Dowds Little Dublin Irish Pub. Take your time to stroll along the sidewalks and, if the mood strikes, relax for a moment on a park bench. Don't leave Kansas City without an outing to Crown Center in Downtown Kansas City. Crown Center is a hometown favorite featuring three-levels of great shopping and dining. It is located next to Hallmark Cards World Headquarters and features three live-performance theaters, a seasonal ice skating rink, Kaleidoscope (a hands-on art experience for kids ages 5-12) and the Hallmark Visitors Center. You will also find an abundance of one-of-a-kind stores, Halls department store, and some of the best restaurants in the Kansas City area. Finally, a visit to Overland Park and Kansas City wouldn’t be complete without checking out some of our quaint neighborhood shopping communities. Westport (MO) is one of Kansas City's premier destinations for dining, shopping and site seeing. Before Kansas City existed there was Westport, the last stop in Missouri on the Santa Fe Trail for wagons heading west. Many of the original buildings still exist and today the area is filled with shops, restaurants and some of the best nightlife venues in town. Brookside (MO) is home to more than 70 shops, restaurants, and offices, all unique and all keeping with the original neighborhood charm and architecture. Some favorites in the area to be sure to see are STUFF (a home, gift and fine art store) and ShopGirls (a charming boutique for women locally owned by two "ShopGirls" of KC). Two other areas not to be missed are the One Nineteen shops and Park Place, both located adjacent to Town Center Plaza. At One Nineteen you will find the metro’s only Crate and Barrel, West Elm and the locally-owned Habitat Shoe Boutique. Park Place brings you two art galleries, a seasonal ice skating rink and several stores and restaurants to choose from. In northern Johnson County, you will find the Prairie Village Shops and Corinth Square. The “Village” is a quaint area with over 50 shops and restaurants to choose from, and Corinth Square provides one of the largest antique malls in the area, Mission Road Antique Mall. Overland Park and the metro area is one of the best shopping destinations in the Country – where you’ll find something for everyone.
Anchor stores include Von Maur, JCPenney, Barnes & Noble and Backwoods.
