The American Royal Barbecue is an annual event in Kansas City on the grounds of Kemper Arena and the American Royal Center. In 2009, over 500 teams competed in the Open and Invitational contests. Attendance was over 70,000 during the 3-day period. With 500+ teams, it is the world’s largest barbecue competition. Friday at the Barbecue is the big party night. Many corporate teams invite their employees and clients to join them. The biggest crowd of the entire weekend is Friday night. Saturday activities including a “Kid’s Q” barbecue contest, carnival games, and reduced admission for kids. Anyone who wears a Boy Scout uniform will receive free admission. The Texas Hold’Em Tournament, traditionally a Thursday evening event, will now be Saturday night in Grand Hall – just outside the Expo. We’ll have a big concert stage out front of the American Royal building, with concert acts both Friday and Saturday night as well as fireworks both nights.

The largest FREE Memorial Day Weekend event in the Midwest. The Kansas City Symphony, led by Music Director Michael Stern, perform patriotic favorites against the backdrop of Kansas City’s historic Union Station on Sunday evening before Memorial Day at 7:30PM. The event concludes with blazing fireworks above the National WWI Museum at Liberty Memorial – Kansas City’s largest fireworks display of the year!

The mission of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival is to make Shakespeare’s works accessible to a diverse audience through free professional theater and educational programs. The Festival produces an annual production of a Shakespeare play, presented free to the public at Southmoreland Park, a pocket park located directly west of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. In its 17-year history, the Festival has presented 22 productions, reaching more than 470,000 audience members.

Jazz in the Woods is a free annual Jazz and music festival to raise money for local children's charities. The event is held on the second Friday & Saturday evening in June. This is a family event which includes children’s crafts, face painting, inflatables and food and drink vendors.
