Harmonies on the Homefront - 2/9/2013 - 10/17/2013

'Harmonies on the Homefront

For Americans at home during the Great War, singing was a means of actively expressing patriotism in private and public settings. The National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial will explore music of the World War I era in a new exhibition called "Harmonies of the Homefront."

The pages of sheet music, which are part of the Museum's extensive collections, are brought to life in this multimedia exhibit. Visitors will view artistic sheet music covers and humorous lyrics, hear historical recordings and even have the chance to try out a few of the big "hits" of the era on a period piano.

Guest exhibition curator Dr. Kristin Griffeath is an Assistant Professor of Music at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Her recent research involves sheet music from World War I, and her thesis, "War Sirens: How the Sheet Music Industry Sold World War I," earned the 2012-2013 Distinguished Master's Thesis Award from UMKC.
Brad Kahlhamer: Bowery Nation - Art Exhibit - 3/22/2013 - 7/21/2013

'Brad Kahlhamer: Bowery Nation - Art Exhibit

Brad Kahlhamer's Bowery Nation installation brings together 100 katsina-like dolls and 22 birds made from a variety of materials. It speaks to the artist's Native American roots and his time spent with the creative community on New York City's Lower East Side.

The table-like construction of Bowery Nation resembles the form of powwow parade floats that carry dancers adorned in colorful feathered and beaded regalia. The structure was made from the artist's studio materials: an old painting table, saw horses, sheets of plywood, a step ladder and wooden benches.

A consistent theme in Kahlhamer's work is identity. He was born in Tucson of American Indian parentage, adopted into a family of German-American heritage and later raised in Wisconsin. Bowery Nation represents what he calls his "third place", the fusion of his personal identities and mythologies.'

Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating & Marriage - 5/10/2013 - 6/23/2013

'Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating & Marriage

Miss Abigail's Guide to Daing, Mating, & Marriage is the story of Miss Abigail, the most sought-after relationship expert to the stars (think Dr. Ruth meets Emily Post), and her sexy sidekick Paco, as they travel the world teaching Miss Abigail's outrageously funny "how-to's" on dating, mating and marriage!

During this 90-minute comedy, you're guaranteed to laugh-out-loud and learn a thing or two...like how to have a perfect kiss (it's all about lip position)...what you should and should not talk about on a date (don't mention your troll doll collection)...and how to let a man think he wears the pants.

Let Miss Abigail take you back to a simpler time, before booty calls and before speed-dating...back when the divorce rate wasn't 50% and when "fidelity" was more than an investment firm!

Great Big Broadway: The Rise of the BIG Broadway Musical - 5/31/2013 - 6/30/2013

'Great Big Broadway: The Rise of the BIG Broadway Musical

In the 1970s, Baby Boomers began looking for self-fulfillment, prompting writer Tom Wolfe to dub them the "Me" generation. American musical theatre followed suit, producing lavish, over-the-top spectacles to satisfy the public's desire for excess. "Bigger is better" became the mantra for Broadway.

From the early musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Stephen Sondheim to today's Broadway where witches, English nannies and webbed crusaders fly through the air, modern musicals are big, big, BIG!'

Polychrome Fiction - Art Exhibit - 6/14/2013 - 9/8/2013

'Polychrome Fiction - Art Exhibit

Polychrome Fiction features the works of Joanne Greenbaum and Jackie Saccoccio, two leading, abstract painters based in New York City. Greenbaum's large-scale, wildly colored canvases often incorporate schematic linear construction evocative of fantastic structures. Saccoccio's new works, completed during her residency at the renowned Amercian Academy in Rome, are titled "Portraits." However, it is difficult to discern a face among the webs, drips and washes of richly hued paint. For both artists color is key, as is creating fictions, structural or psychological.
