KC Plates Foodie Guide To OP

A Foodie’s Ultimate Guide to the Best Eats and Drinks in KC|OP

Meet Claire, the appetite behind Kansas City’s food Instagram, @kcplates. Sit back and enjoy the read as she takes you through a full weekend of wining and dining through the Overland Park food scene.

DAY 1, Arrival | Friday:

First things first and sweets are in order! Mud Pie Bakery has been serving vegan treats to the Kansas City area since 2011. My go-to order always includes their house- made Chai with almond milk, a bundt cake or donut when I need a little sugar or if I’m feeling savory the ever popular ‘cheesy chorizo’ biscuit. Mud Pie Bakery has won over my heart and I think they’ll win yours too.

A trip to the Kansas City area wouldn’t be complete without a stop for BBQ. A quick google search for the Q’ and you’ll realize there is not a shortage of options here. While Q39 is always a crowd pleaser, if you want to switch it up, head a little further South to Burnt End BBQ. With a name like Burnt End BBQ that’s exactly what I would recommend ordering, their burnt ends! Make it a platter and add a few sides and you’ll be fueled up to tackle the rest of the weekend.

DAY 2 | Saturday:

Rise and shine easy knowing Pilgrim Coffee Co. is there for you in all of your caffeine needs. On top of offering a phenomenal seasonal drink menu (hello coconut and brown sugar latte) their pastry case won’t disappoint.

For lunch head towards downtown Overland Park to the Burg & Barrel. Their patio is the perfect spot to catch a game, grab beers, burgers and their hand battered onion rings. Plus, the patio is doggo friendly if your furry friend is joining you.

Next up, it’s time for a wine tasting. Now this isn’t your average wine tasting, you won’t have to venture far or even to a vineyard. Aubrey Vineyards offers tastings 7 days a week inside of Vinyl Renaissance & Audio in downtown Overland Park. Try a wine or two while you meander through the record store, it’s the perfect escape from the outdoors.

Thai food anyone? Pad Thai Restaurant is the perfect stop for authentic Thai flavors and dishes. You can’t go wrong with the Pad Thai, but if you are wanting to switch things up the Chue Chee salmon is always a good idea. And if you’re in the mood for a fun cocktail you’ve come to the right place!

If you live for post dinner dessert, then I have just the spot for you. Situated just around the corner from Pad Thai Restaurant, I Am Frozen Dessert Cafe is truly a feast for the eyes! I can’t recommend the Honey Toast enough but if you’re looking for something lighter, the shaved ice cream is melt-in-your-mouth good.

Day 3 Departure | Sunday:

After a slow Sunday morning, find yourself at Cozy’s Cafe for a classic diner breakfast. Grab a seat outside and fuel up on coffee, biscuits and gravy and blueberry pancakes stacked high.

Here’s to a tasty weekend! Cheers!
