Luminary Walk
Kick off your holiday season with a festive walk through glowing holiday lights at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens!
Whether you’re seeking a family-friendly outing or a peaceful evening with friends or your partner, this experience has it all.
From the moment you drive through the entrance, the warm glow of thousands of lights draws you in. It’s a good idea to arrive with plenty of time before your reservation, as parking tends to fill quickly due to the hundreds of visitors coming to experience the lights every weekend.
As you approach the Longhouse Visitor Center, you’ll see families, couples, and friends bundled up in coats, scarves, and hats, ready for a festive night under the lights. Inside, there’s an area where you can purchase hot chocolate, cider, and tasty snacks to keep you warm during your walk.
What to Expect
The Luminary Walk is divided into distinct sections, each offering its own unique charm.
Start with the Train Garden, a favorite for both kids and adults.
Note that the trains in the Train Garden only run between 5:00 and 8:45 p.m., so plan accordingly.
Next, pass through a tunnel of lights, which leads to the Electric Glow portion of the walk, an open area filled with illuminated shapes, figures, and a glowing tree pathway.
You can even climb a staircase to enjoy a view of the lights from above – a perfect spot for photos.
Further down the path, you’ll encounter one of the most magical parts of the evening: the Candlelit Pathways that take you into the woods.
Walk quietly to fully absorb the enchanting moment, as trails lined with soft candlelight create a fairy-tale atmosphere. Bridges and trees wrapped in sparkling lights add vibrant pops of color to this peaceful setting.
Along the way, you’ll come across live musical performances and whimsical gnome houses that will fully immerse you in the experience.
Meeting Santa
For families, a highlight of the evening is Santa’s Woodland Depot, where children can meet Santa Claus and share their Christmas wishes. Be sure to visit between 5:00 and 8:30 p.m. to catch Santa in action.
Tips for a Great Visit
The Luminary Walk is well-organized, but a little planning can make your visit even better:
- Dress warmly: Kansas evenings can be chilly, so wear layers to stay comfortable.
- Arrive early: Parking can fill up quickly, so plan to get there ahead of your time slot.
- Bring a camera: There are countless photo opportunities throughout the event.
- Reserve tickets early: This is a popular event, and tickets often sell out in advance.
Candlelight Stroll
For a quieter experience, the Candlelight Stroll is a great option.
This adults-only night offers all the beauty of the Luminary Walk in a more serene setting. It’s perfect for a calm evening with your partner or adult friends and family members.
To make it even more special, wine and warm adult beverages are available for purchase, adding a cozy touch to the light-filled stroll. The Adults-Only version of this event takes place on select nights, so check the events calendar to make your plans.
