Three Asian BBQ Spots to Try in Overland Park
If you’ve never been to an Asian BBQ spot before, it’s not just about the food, it’s about the experience.
You get to cook the meat yourself right at the table, choose your sauces, and enjoy a meal that feels like a little event with friends or family. It’s interactive, filling, and always a good time. Overland Park has some great options, and these three spots that really stand out for their food, vibe, and variety.
Chosun Korean BBQ
Chosun Korean BBQ is a local family owned restaurant that’s been around for a while, but it recently got a makeover. Now it’s more modern, bright, and the perfect place to go for a good meal and atmosphere.
When you walk in, you’ll notice each table has its own grill, no matter your party's size. I love that because it makes it super easy for everyone to cook at their own pace. They offer different BBQ combos, which is great if you want to try a few different meats without having to commit to just one. Personally, I’m a big fan of their Beef Bulgogi and the Pork Belly, but you can’t go wrong with anything on their menu.
All the meat combos come with unlimited small side dishes called banchan. This includes classics like kimchi, fish cakes, a fresh salad, rice, and more. It’s the kind of spread that makes you feel like you’re getting a ton of value for your money.
If BBQ isn’t what you’re craving, they’ve also got hot pot, a warm, flavorful broth where you can cook your own meats, veggies, and noodles right at the table. To pair with your meal, they serve traditional Korean drinks like soju (in a variety of flavors) and refreshing Korean beers.
Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ
Gyu-Kaku is a Japanese BBQ chain with a local welcoming feel. The vibe here is lively, with a smokeless grill at each table so you don’t walk out smelling like a campfire.
One thing I really love about Gyu-Kaku is their happy hour. They run it Monday through Saturday from 11:30 AM to 6 PM and all day Sunday. That’s a long window to enjoy discounted appetizers, salads, grilled items, and even sushi. Top picks are the Harami Skirt Steak in Miso Marinade which is super tender and flavorful, the Prime Kalbi Short Rib in Tare Sweet Soy Marinade, which is a little sweet, a little savory, and absolutely delicious with rice.
They’ve also got a nice selection of drinks, from Japanese sake to shochu to ice-cold beer. Be sure to save room for dessert, because here the fun continues with tableside marshmallow roasting for your own s’mores.
It’s the kind of place where I always recommend making a reservation, especially if you’re going during happy hour or on the weekend, it fills up fast.
KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot
KPOT is a national chain serving a mix of Korean BBQ and hot pot all in one, so if you’re someone like me who always struggles to pick just one thing, you can have the best of both worlds.
Here, you can go all-in with their all-you-can-eat lunch or dinner. Lunch is a little cheaper, starting at $20.99, but the price comes with a limited selection of meat versus their dinner, which is $30.99. Every BBQ meal gets access to their sauce, appetizer, and dessert bar for unlimited add-ons. And if you want both BBQ and hot pot, it’s just $5 extra to add hot pot to your BBQ meal.
One rule they have, which I actually appreciate, is that if you leave too much uneaten food, there’s a surcharge. It encourages people to order only what they can eat, so food doesn’t go to waste. I suggest ordering as you go, adding more meat plates once you’ve finished the ones in front of you.
KPOT also has a happy hour Monday through Friday from 12 PM to 4 PM with deals on both food and drinks. And if you’re looking for a fun birthday outing, they let you eat for free on your birthday!
