Sporting Kansas City

Kansas City is undeniably a sports city. And while you’re in Overland Park, you’ll be a short drive away from a number of stadiums and sports-related attractions, giving you plenty of opportunities to get in the middle of the action.

A passionate, flourishing fan base and a state-of-the-art stadium have helped Kansas City earn a reputation as the “Soccer Capital of America.” Located in nearby Kansas City, Kansas, Children’s Mercy Park is home of Sporting Kansas City, the city’s MLS team.

Sporting KC’s original name was the KC Wiz that was established in 1995. The team officially extended its name to the Wizards in 1996 and originally played their games at Arrowhead Stadium until 2007.  As the team looked for a permanent stadium, it moved to the then Community America Ballpark of the Kansas T-Bones from 2008-2010. In 2011, the team rebranded themselves from the Wizards to Sporting KC, adopting a more European-style team name. Sporting KC moved into the brand new state-of-the-art Children’s Mercy Park.

The whole family will enjoy the open-air, canopy-covered stadium. A sea of blue fills the space as dedicated fans will be decked out with scarfs, banners and their favorite player's jersey. Enjoy the experience and join in the chants as Sporting Kansas City takes the field.

With a soccer fan base as passionate as the one in Kansas City—and not to mention the world-class training facilities—it comes as no surprise that the City of Fountains has been officially named a host city for match play during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

If you can’t make it to a game while in Overland Park, be sure to watch it at one of the local sports bars in OP!
